London’s St Yeghiche Church Celebrates the 25th Anniversary of Its Consecration and the Feast of the Holy Translators
On Sunday, 11 October 2026, the faithful gathered at St Yeghiche Armenian Church in London to celebrate the 25th anniversary of its consecration and the Feast of the Holy Translators with a solemn Divine Liturgy and an evening concert of sacred music. The celebrations brought together the congregation, representatives of sister Churches, civic guests and members of the Armenian community for prayer and thanksgiving.
Consecrated on 10 June 2001, St Yeghiche Church has served for a quarter of a century as a spiritual home for the Armenian community, providing a place for worship and fellowship and for passing on faith and national heritage to new generations. Its acquisition and restoration were made possible through the generosity of Mr Vatche and Mrs Tamar Manoukian.
At the invitation of His Grace Bishop Hovakim Manukyan, Primate of the Armenian Diocese of the United Kingdom and Ireland, the Divine Liturgy was celebrated by His Grace Bishop Aren Shahenian, Primate of the Armenian Diocese of Argentina and Chile, who previously served as parish priest of St Yeghiche Church. Welcoming his brother bishop, Bishop Hovakim said: “Dear brother, welcome home.”
In his sermon, Bishop Aren reflected on the call “Come, let us build the holy altar of light”, emphasising that living faith makes a church a spiritual home. He urged the faithful to share Christ’s light through love, forgiveness and service.
Passing on the Heritage of Faith
In his anniversary address, Bishop Hovakim reflected on the mission of the Holy Translators, drawing parallels between St Mesrop Mashtots and William Tyndale. He recalled attending an event a few days earlier dedicated to Tyndale’s legacy and the Bible’s call to Christian unity.
He emphasised that, in different centuries, both Mashtots and Tyndale sought to make the Word of God accessible to people in their own language. He recalled the creation of the Armenian alphabet with the support of St Sahak Partev and King Vramshapuh, the translation of Holy Scripture and the establishment of schools.
Bishop Hovakim said the Holy Translators, whose number includes the church’s patron, St Yeghiche, had entrusted the Armenian people with a precious heritage. The responsibility for carrying it forward now rests with the present generation.
“How shall we pass on this heritage over the next twenty-five years?” he asked. “By living our faith, serving one another and making room for others in the life of our Church.” He concluded with St Paul’s exhortation to do everything in love (1 Corinthians 16:14).

A Pontifical Blessing and the Participation of Sister Churches
During the Divine Liturgy, at Bishop Hovakim’s invitation, Bishop Aren read the pontifical encyclical of blessing and appreciation from His Holiness Karekin II, Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of All Armenians, addressed to the parish priest, Parish Council and faithful congregation.
His Holiness expressed his appreciation for the significance of the church’s acquisition and restoration for the Armenian community in Great Britain, paying particular tribute to the dedication of Mr Vatche and Mrs Tamar Manoukian. He described the church as one of the finest testimonies to the Manoukian family’s steadfast faith and achievements in the service of their nation.
Recalling the consecration ceremony in 2001, the Catholicos gave thanks to God that a vibrant and faithful community had grown around the church. He encouraged the congregation to mark the anniversary through new achievements in church life and initiatives serving the Armenian people, with particular care for the spiritual education and formation of the younger generation.
His Holiness extended his blessing and appreciation to the Manoukian family, the Diocesan Primate, the parish priest, the Parish Council and the community. He prayed that the Lord would preserve St Yeghiche Church under the protection of His Holy Right Hand and bless the Armenian faithful of Great Britain.
Bishop Mike Royal, General Secretary of Churches Together in England, also addressed the congregation during the Divine Liturgy, offering congratulations on the anniversary.
Following the Liturgy, Bishop Hovakim conducted the blessing of schoolchildren and students, with the participation of pupils from Armenian community schools and young Armenians studying at higher education institutions. The Rt Revd Dr Rosemarie Mallett, Bishop of Croydon and Acting Bishop of Southwark, also addressed those present, speaking particularly to the children.
Royal and Church Messages of Congratulations
His Majesty King Charles III and Dame Sarah Mullally, Archbishop of Canterbury, sent congratulatory messages, which were read during the evening celebration by the Rt Revd Dr Christopher Cocksworth, Dean of Windsor.
The King paid tribute to the riches of the Armenian Church’s history, liturgical life and poetry, and to the Armenian people’s centuries of Christian witness. He recalled his visits to the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin and St Yeghiche Church, thanking the community for its example of faith, hope and love over the past quarter of a century. Referring to St Gregory of Narek’s words on faith, he expressed the hope that the light of God’s love would continue to guide the community in its care for all people.
The Archbishop of Canterbury described St Yeghiche Church as a place of prayer, worship and Christian witness. She highlighted the friendship between the two Churches and Bishop Hovakim’s dedication to Christian unity, referring also to their shared service as Presidents of Churches Together in England. She expressed the hope that the church would continue to nurture faith, renew hope and share Christ’s love with generations to come.
Deacon Vahan read the messages from His Holiness Karekin II and His Eminence Archbishop Nathan Hovhannisian during the evening celebration.
Congratulatory addresses were delivered by His Eminence Archbishop Angaelos, Coptic Orthodox Archbishop of London; Councillor Janet Evans, Mayor of the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea; and the Rt Revd James (Jim) Curry, Auxiliary Bishop of Westminster, who spoke on behalf of the Archbishop of Westminster.
