Oxford Church Hosts Armenian Vespers to Honour Genocide Martyrs

On 24 April 2026, the University Church of St Mary the Virgin hosted a traditional Armenian Vespers service to mark the 111th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide and to honour its Holy Martyrs.

The service opened with a welcome from Alvyn Pettersen, who spoke about Armenia’s long Christian heritage and the importance of remembrance. He said Christians have a responsibility to confront injustice and to stand in solidarity with those affected by violence, adding that the Church of England continues to pray for peace and security in Armenia.

Grachia Margarian, founder of the White Cross Foundation and an Oxford alumnus, addressed the congregation on the legacy of the Armenian martyrs. He described them as witnesses to the Christian faith whose sacrifice continues to inspire new generations, and encouraged Armenians today to reflect those values in their daily lives. He also highlighted the importance of strengthening Christian unity between Armenia and the United Kingdom.

The Vespers were led by Father Nshan of the Armenian Apostolic Church in London, and included choral and organ music.

The event was organised by the University Church and the White Cross Foundation, with support from the Diocese of the Armenian Church of the United Kingdom and Ireland. Organisers said the service aimed to provide a space for remembrance, education, and unity among Christian communities.
