“Lord, Open Our Eyes”: A Call to Put Faith into Action at St Sarkis

Recognising Christ in those who need our help was the central message of Bishop Hovakim Manukyan’s sermon at St Sarkis Armenian Church on Sunday, 18 October.

Reflecting on Luke 4:14–23 and Jesus’ declaration, “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,” the Primate explored Christ’s mission to bring good news to the poor, freedom to captives, sight to the blind and hope to the oppressed.

He called on the faithful to respond to poverty with practical generosity, support those struggling with addiction, and offer time and compassion to people burdened by loneliness, illness or loss.

Addressing life amid social media and constant advertising, Bishop Hovakim also urged the congregation to seek truth and recognise the needs that can remain hidden behind carefully presented images.

“We say our bread,” he reflected on the Lord’s Prayer. “Our prayer therefore commits us to sharing that bread.”

The sermon concluded with a prayer that captured its invitation to every Christian: “Strengthen us through Your Spirit, so that the Gospel we hear may become the life we live.”
