Pentecost Sermon by Bishop Hovakim Manukyan at St Sarkis Church
On Sunday, 24 May 2026, on the Feast of Pentecost (Hogegalust), Bishop Hovakim Manukyan celebrated the Divine Liturgy at St. Sarkis Armenian Church in London and delivered a sermon reflecting on the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles in the Upper Room.
Drawing upon the Gospel of John and the Book of Acts, Bishop Hovakim spoke about the transforming power of the Holy Spirit, who turned fearful disciples into courageous witnesses of Christ. He explained the significance of Holy Chrismation in the Armenian Church. He reminded the faithful that Christians are called not merely to appear religious outwardly, but to be inwardly renewed by the grace of God.
Reflecting on the challenges of modern society, he described today’s world as a “new Babel,” marked by division, noise, and spiritual restlessness. In contrast, Pentecost reveals God’s desire to unite humanity through the Holy Spirit, who heals divisions and draws people together in the love of Christ.
Addressing Armenian families in the diaspora, Bishop Hovakim encouraged parents to pass on not only Armenian language and culture but also the living faith of the Church. He called upon young people to embrace their Christian identity with confidence and reminded the congregation that the same Holy Spirit who strengthened the Apostles continues to guide and renew the Church today.
Concluding his sermon, Bishop Hovakim prayed that the Holy Spirit would descend upon all the faithful, cleanse hearts from sin, strengthen them in faith, and make them living witnesses of the Risen Christ.
The service was followed by a joyful garden festival to commemorate Pentecost. Organised by St Sarkis Parish with support from the ACYO “Avetis” London group, the afternoon featured performances from the Akhtamar APG and singer Laura Avetisyan, folk songs with the clergy, an Armenian DJ, and community dancing. It also offered delicious Armenian BBQ, traditional dishes and sweets, and space for independent stall merchants. More on this magnificent community occasion to come soon.
